Four Lakes House

A residence inspired by the old ranches located in the pampas

The old gaucho ranches were large rural properties dedicated to cattle breeding, and formed the foundation of gaucho culture, encompassing traditions such as chimarrão (a type of yerba mate tea) and churrasco (barbecue) cooked over an open fire. Casa Quatro Lagos, located in the Campos de Cima da Serra region, brings modern living together with the tradition of these old ranches, taking advantage of the expansive views of the surrounding pampas.

The rather cold winters and hot summers guided the design of the project. The internal courtyard creates an open area protected from the dreaded and cold south wind. Meanwhile, the wide verandas surrounding the house provide shaded seating areas to shelter from the strong summer sun.

The residence is divided into two main volumes: the living area and the private area. Each has its own materiality, meeting the needs of its use. While the living area is characterized by the use of glass, offering a panoramic view of the mountains, the private area is clad in wood panels that ensure privacy.

The project seeks to respect the region's origins by using local materials, such as stone and wood, in a contemporary way. Both on the facade and in the interior spaces, doors and shutters open and close completely, transforming the house according to the resident's wishes and the size of the party.

The project includes different living spaces, whether for more intimate moments in the living room, or for celebrations and events in the outdoor grill area, always with the vast landscape as a backdrop.

The region's landscape inspired the project to open itself to its surroundings, offering views from all areas. To ensure privacy, vegetation was used in various ways, such as in the bathrooms where internal courtyards were created, thus also establishing a connection with nature.
